Times of India: Renowned artistes like Paresh Rawal, Nandita Das, Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar will feature in “Gulaal – A Festival of Expressions!” organised by the Indian Rhythm and Arts Association, in association with The Times of India, from February 22 to 24.
The festival has been conceptualised by Harshita Deshpande and will take place at Amanora Arena. It will be inaugurated by Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar at 7 pm on February 22.
A carefully selected mix of various performance genres, Gulaal will also feature artistes like Alarmel Valli, Daksha Mashruwala and Mallika Sarabhai. The festival will feature two shows every evening, split into the concept of ‘motion’, which will have various dance forms, and ’emotions’.
Day one will have a Bharatnatyam performance by Alarmel Valli followed by a play, ‘Between the Lines’, in which Nandita Das and her husband Subodh Mascara characterise an urban couple caught in the anguish of modernity and traditions.
Day two will begin with an Odissi dance performed by Daksha Mashruwala. It will be followed by the gripping, heartwarming and thought-provoking play ‘Krishan vs Kanhaiya’, by the multi-faceted actor Paresh Rawal.
The last day of the festival will feature danseuse Mallika Sarabhai who will present ‘India: Then, Now, Forever’. This show is a journey through time, which incorporates classical, folk, tribal and contemporary dance to celebrate India’s multiculturalism and plurality. The festival will conclude with Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar presenting ‘Kaifi Aur Main’ – a celebration of the renowned Urdu poet Kaifi Azmi’s life with live music by Jaswinder Singh.

All proceeds from the festival will go to YESS Foundation, a non-governmental organisation working towards the rehabilitation of orphans, autistic adults and empowerment of women.
