Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), our beloved educational institution has overtaken Mumbai University (MU) as the State’s largest. It was already ahead of MU in terms of academic quality and overall excellence, and now it has a larger number of affiliated colleges too!

PU currently has 890 affiliated colleges and 70 research institutes, whereas MU has 823 colleges.

Vice Chancellor Nitin Karmalkar said that they’re proud of the fact that PU is ahead of every other similar institution in terms of quality mandates but that due to its size, there are also hurdles to overcome.

Pune University was established in February of 1949, under Poona University Act, passed by Bombay Legislature in 1948. In 1949, only 18 colleges were affiliated with PU, and an enrolment of only 8000 students!

We bow down to this historic institution and hope for its tremendous success!
