The Founder and Managing Director of Massive Restaurants Pvt. Ltd., Mr. Zorawar Kalra, is a man who has donned many hats in the hospitality industry. Hailing from an Army background, Zorawar has had a typical Punjabi childhood with loads of desi ghee mein bana ghar ka khana.
We spoke to him about his love for the industry, his passion for food, the curiosity that makes him want to offer a different experience to his customers and why he thinks Pune is ready for Farzi Café.
Why did you decide to pursue a career in the hospitality business?
Like any other Punjabi household we have been associated with food for generations, with my grandmother and mother being the finest cooks I’ve ever known. Food was a continuous topic during our family dining conversation. My father, Mr. Jiggs Kalra, has spent a major part of his life reviving, restoring, recording, reinventing and reintroducing Indian cuisine to diners from across the globe and placing it on the global map, earning him the title of The Czar of Indian Cuisine and Tastemaker to the Nation. Growing up with him exposed us to a lot of cuisines, both local and international. I would spend a lot of time with him in and around the kitchen, and that’s when I realised that I wanted to be a restaurateur. I spoke to Dad about it and he was more than supportive of my decision and thus I headed to Boston post my graduation to get an understanding into business management.
What do you love about this industry?
It’s the sheer passion that drives the industry. You have the restaurant and kitchen on one hand and the guests experiencing and appreciating the culinary innovation and hospitality on the other. The challenge is fascinating.
I would say why not Pune! It is not just an urban melting pot of cultures, it is also one of the cosmopolitan cities offering numerous avenues for the youth! So yeah, why not Pune?
Farzi Cafe, Mumbai was quite the hot topic on social media a couple of months ago. What should we expect here in Pune?
(Laughs!) Well, I would say you should expect nothing less. We are truly humbled with the appreciation our patrons have shown for the cuisine and hospitality synonymous with Farzi Café across all regions of its operations. We hope that our guests in Pune also enjoy the same.
