Ganeshotsav gained popularity when Indian freedom fighter and social reformer, Lokmanya Tilak, revived the celebrations of Ganeshotsav as a large-scale public event in hopes to unite Indians in their freedom struggle against the British Raj. So, one can even say that Pune is the birthplace of the Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav!

While the festival itself is celebrated across several states in the country, it is a universal truth that Maharashtra is THE place to be in to really experience this one-of-a-kind Indian festival. So, it comes as no surprise that for the 125th year of Ganeshotsav, Pune has massive plans- 125 events to be precise! Here are some of the most prominent ones.

Mayor of Pune, Mukta Tilak, who belongs to the family of Lokmanya Tilak, recently announced the imminent celebrations of the festival that has become a part of the city’s heritage and culture. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has planned a plethora of events across the city, making a budgetary allocation of Rs. 2 Crores just for this festival! This year, PMC also designed a unique logo just to mark the 125th year!

The civic body plans to take to social media to reach out to the younger population of Pune and get them involved. For one, we know that they’re planning to conduct a massive Ganesh-idol marking event. They’ve also got a record-breaking 5000 youth and students participating in a dhol-tasha event this year.

Additionally, MTDC has made the age-old tradition of pandal-hopping easier this year with the introduction of the Ganesh Darshan Tour! This means you and your friends can hit those pandals in an AC mini bus and cover the five Maanache Ganpatis, the popular Shrimant Dagadusheth Halwai Ganpati, Sharda-Ganesh of Mandai Ganpati, Shrimant Bhau Rangari Ganesh Mandal, and many more. What’s better, a guide will accompany you and give you constant insights into the history, culture and heritage of the festivals and the pandals themselves!

The PMC also plans to set up selfie booths across the city! Yay! They’ll be conducting bike rallies throughout the festival. These are a few among many events that will showcase the city’s rich culture, history and the journey of this legendary festival.

Who would have thought Ganeshotsav in Pune could get any bigger than it already is!
