To contain the Coronavirus spread, retail stores, bars and restaurants in Pune will remain closed for three days. Stores that sell essential items like food, groceries and medicines will be open.

The Pune Vyapari Association and Pune Saraf Association decided to stay shut in order to avoid spreading Covid-19 among citizens. A total of at least 40,000 shops, selling items like jewellery, stationery, clothing, electronics etc., will be closed until Friday, March 20.

Over 800 restaurants and bars, including ones in hotels, have also closed their doors until Friday. Most of them also decided against home-delivery services.

Mr. Fatechand Ranks, president, Vyapari Mahasangh Association Pune branch, said, “We have decided to remain shut for three days as a precautionary measure. Life is more precious than business or money. We will be fining those shops found operating who are members of the association. First day the fine is Rs5,000/-, second day Rs 10,000/- and third day Rs 15,000/-. Post this we will terminate the owner’s membership. We appeal to the citizens to stay at home and take precautions.”

Mr. Surendra Karamchandani, Partner at Venus Traders, said, “What will we achieve with business and money, when we don’t have our health? We will do everything we can to stop the spread of the virus; we appeal to all citizens to distance themselves from each other and take good care of your and each other’s health!”

On Friday, owners will access the situation and take a call on whether to open or continue with the closure.
