Mansheel Gujral – India’s Raw Star Contestant
Mansheel Gujral, a vocalist and sound designer, born and brought up in Pune is all set to set the stage on fire of India’s Raw Star, a reality show on Star Plus that will air on Sunday, August 24, at 7pm. Here, she speaks about her interests, musical aspirations and her journey on the show so far.
How did you get hooked to music?
One of my earliest memories of my tryst with music was my father taking me to the Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav since the age of seven. He heard me humming away the entire day to different tunes. Watching the performances, I wanted to sing like the artists too and mesmerize the audience. This was even before I learnt how to read and write Hindi properly. I insisted on learning Indian classical music and got enrolled. I still believe in this, with the same conviction that my seven-year-old mind did. My pursuit for excellence is on-going.
My music influences come from a lot of genres. I sing and listen to everything; right from EDM to Gazals and I don’t limit myself to any genre of music. I can go from folk to pop to soul, everything.
How has the journey of your music evolved over all these years?
I started my music lessons when I was seven. However I didn’t like music exams so I stopped my training. I have a 14-member band called the Mansheel Gujral Collective. We perform various genres of music at different places in the city. Apart from singing for my band, I am also a guest performer with other bands in the city. I moved to Mumbai to learn music at Whistling Woods. And recently, I made my debut as a playback singer in Rajat Kapoor’s Ankhon Dekhi for the song Dheeme Re Re.
It’s very different, starting from the audition procedures. We had to send a video of our performance. They are not only taking care of how we perform but also making an effort in grooming us. Even the sets are of international standards and the person who is designing it has designed sets for Beyonce and Lady Gaga. The makers are taking it to another level. Our songs are going to be choreographed, which is something that differentiates the show from other musical reality shows.
How is it working out with other contestants on the show?
None of us are new to this field and in some way or the other, we have been associated with music for the longest time. As most of us come from varied backgrounds, it is interesting to see what each one of us has to offer.
