Food Review: The Square, Novotel
Located on the busy stretch of Viman Nagar Road is a building that looks like an array of MNCs that have cropped up in abundance in the area. Hotel Novotel might look like an office from the outside, but within, it is packed with luxurious amenities, wonderful decor and lavish interiors. After browsing through the hotel premise, I visited The Square, located on the ground floor of Novotel.
Although The Square is located in a corner of the building, it is big and spacious. As you enter you are greeted by the sounds of kids enjoying themselves in the kids’ section, the melodies sung by the beautiful singer performing here and the waft of fresh food being prepared. Even though there are many tables to seat the customers, most of the space is taken up by food counters which prepare and serve the freshly cooked dishes right before your eyes. I visited Novotel during Easter and so, the decorations and the menu maintained the theme. After taking a trip around the food section to see the various food items we could enjoy, I seated myself, waiting for the food to arrive.
The range at The Square is humongous, you will find cuisines from all over the world served here. They have various types of breads, salads, a Mediterranean station, Oriental station, Pizza Station, Stir Fry Counter, Seafood Grill Station, Indian Station and a richly decorated table showcasing various desserts (most of it also keeping up with the Easter theme). I tried the following dishes:
Cajun Spiced Chicken Salad with Roast peppers & radish (okay! The dish is served cold, tastes different.)
Hummus & Smoked Chicken (okay)
Stir Fried Noodles with Chicken (good)
Fried Fish Salmon (tasty. The seafood grill counter has many more options and sauces, choose wisely!)
Chicken Tikka (tasty! do try.)
Hariyali Chicken Kebab (okay)
Roast leg of Pork (wins you over. The meat was fresh and tasted soft and wonderfully sweet)
Roast Turkey (good but doesn’t fare well when compared to the pork)
Marinated Mushrooms (okay)
Paneer Lababdar (good)
Murg Tikka Makhani with butter nan (loved it. Nan was fresh and kadak, the way I asked)
Chicken Biryani (wonderful. Seldom do high end restaurants cook the dish as perfectly)
Mutton Biryani (just like the chicken biryani, however, I liked it better, being a mutton fan)
Easter Pudding with nutmeg custard (okay)
Hazelnut Chocolate Cake (the only dessert I enjoyed. Tasty and best suited for chocolate lovers)
Baked cheesecake with strawberry coulis (not at par with my expectations. Had a slight sour taste)
Tiramisu (again not what I expected. Good but doesn’t make you go wow!)
Chocolate Mousse (disappointed. A lot to improve upon.)
Even though I ate plenty (just look at the variety!), I would say I did not even try half the items on the menu. They won my heart with the variety in the buffet menu and the quality of food served here.
Prompt and welcoming. The waiters and chefs were extremely helpful and friendly and, made some great recommendations. Even for live food counters, I would be told to be seated after giving the order and the food would arrive within minutes. Despite its setup, there is always someone overlooking your table and will arrive each time you look up.
The place is perfect for going out with family and friends. The drinks are well-priced, slightly lower than the prices of most hi-end restaurants. The food has amazing variety and quality, though the taste could improve a bit. Other than the roasted pork and biryani, there was no dish that hit the ‘Oh-I-So-Love-This’ mark. The desserts were disappointing, since I expected a lot from them after the quality food I had. However, overall, the experience was excellent. I would definitely recommend it to people who are looking for fine dining options in the city.
