I have always been a fan of new age Marathi cinema that is now breaking traditional barriers and entering territories that were so far unexplored or perhaps even considered a taboo. Balak Palak (BP) is one such attempt by acclaimed director Ravi Jadhav who gives us an insight into the lives of four friends who are at that delicate stage of their life where they have questions which no one is willing to answer.
What are these questions? Does anyone really answer them? How do the curious kids quench their thirst for knowledge? Does this journey of finding the truth affect their friendship? BP deals with such situations in a fairly light way without being too preachy or making the audience feel uncomfortable. What I loved about the film is the way the director, well supported by the cinematographer and the art designer, have recreated the era of the 80s. The 80’s setting easily connects with a lot of us who grew up in that age of innocence or perhaps for some it was an age of loss of innocence. The film’s greatest strength comes from it’s four central characters. The child actors are brilliant and such a treat to watch. This talented young bunch has delivered certain scenes with maturity rarely seen even among established stars. The music of this film by Vishal – Shekhar is enjoyable too, specially the way they have remixed the famous shlok “Susangati Sada” or even Haravali Pakhare. The picturisation of Susangati Sada during an act of Kusang is an irony we can’t miss.
Thankfully this film also comes with English subtitles (which may not be accurate all the time but is still a welcome step) which make it accessible to a wider audience. BP is a Brilliant Picture and must not be missed especially by parents of young adolescent children.
Please go watch it in a cinema hall to encourage good Marathi cinema.
