The Aroma of Navratri

Colourful costumes and accessories, traditional or Bollywood music, synchronised garba or dandiya moves — Navratri meant all of this for most of us till now. The pandemic has, however, changed it completely. 

But who says you can’t get into the festive mode this Navratri? Actually, there are still ways to do that. Turn your  living room into a garba ground by dancing to some peppy numbers with family and friends. Or just go meet that Gujarati friend and enjoy some home-made mouth -watering snacks at his/her place. Food is an integral part of a culture, after all.

Don’t have a Gujarati friend? Well, no need to fret. The pandemic has turned many of us into decent chefs. We can surely try and rustle up Navratri-appropriate delicacies in the kitchen.

I’m going to share with you the recipe of a kheer I’ve been eating for years. A traditional Gujarati dish, it is specially served at Goddess Durga’s  Bhog in the temples of Gujarat. It is called Lapsi which is a very simple dish and can be quickly whipped up even when you have guests around. 

It is also extremely healthy and packs a lot of goodness. The aroma of the dish wafting through your house,  especially in the rains, is sure to excite everyone around.


  • Cooking Time: 30-40 mins
  • Prep Time: 10-15 mins


  • 1 cup dalia/ broken wheat granules
  • 1/3 cup ghee
  • 3 cups of water
  • 2-3 pods of cardamom /  1 teaspoon elaichi powder 
  • Assorted dry fruits – cashews, almonds and raisins 1 teaspoon each
  • 1 ½ cup gud or jaggery ( sugar can be used instead of jaggery)


  1. In a pan, add 2 spoons of ghee and fry the cashews and almonds, drain and keep aside.
  2. Add the remaining ghee in the pan and roast the dalia until golden brown.
  3. Simultaneously boil 3 cups of water. Once the dalia is golden brown, add the water gradually while stirring.
  4. Add the raisins, cover the mixture with a lid and let simmer for 10 mins on a low to medium flame.
  5. Add jaggery, stir for a minute, and cook again for 10 mins till the gud water is absorbed.
  6. Lastly, add elaichi powder and dry fruits and mix. 
  7. This dish can be served hot or cold according to your preference.

Although a simple kheer, it will bring out the festive vibe in all of us. So let’s dress up, pick up our pots and pans and create some magic.
