A group of Pune-based techies have taken to ‘Plogging’ on weekends to make the city plastic free! What is Plogging, you ask? Think jogging while picking up litter! This fitness initiative was first started in Sweden and soon caught on across the world.
Vivek Gurav, a Pune-based engineer and founder of Pune Ploggers, first kicked off Plogging in Pune on weekends. Around 50 or so engineers from the city’s Hinjawadi and Wakad areas started to jog/walk for anywhere between 2-5 km on Saturdays and Sundays, each collecting around 5 kg of garbage! Vivek and a lot of others have now made this their daily routine.
Vivek Gurav has personally put in well over 100 km by now, determined to tackle various health as well as environment concerns through Plogging. He’s also one of the few youngsters to have won the Indian Youth Award, 2019 for his vision and efforts!
The group has regularly been in touch with PMC and PCMC regarding the challenge of disposal/processing of the plastic and garbage they collect.
Their collection of up to 500 kg of plastic and garbage collected is handed over to the city’s waste collection vehicles.
This initiative has not gone unnoticed by local authorities, including PMC’s Waste Management Department as well as local Hinjawadi cops, both of whom laud Vivek and the groups efforts towards a Swachh Pune!
Now this is some great news, isn’t it, Punekars?
