Marathi Sahitya or Marathi literature has been one of the most reputed and recognised literature in our country. Spanning over countless decades, our Marathi authors are the reason why Maharashtra’s culture and heritage has been penned down so beautifully, and ultimately, loved by the entire country.
These writers, authors and poets have also been responsible for changing the socio-political scene in our state. Especially during the pre-independence era, our authors instilled the fire in the masses, causing them to stand as one. They have defined and retold the art of storytelling, leaving a massive legacy behind them. And although the scope is far too wide to just write about seven authors, these names definitely need to be remembered and celebrated. Here’s a list of seven amazing Marathi authors you need to read ASAP!
Purushottam Laxman Deshpande
P.L Deshpande or Pu La Deshpande is one of the most recognised and loved authors in our state. A personal favorite, this amazing man changed my views on life’s perspective. A brilliant humorist, his observations about the Maharashtrian society have earned him an immortal spot in all our hearts. My favorite work of his which I would like to recommend is Vyakti Ani Valli, Asa Mi Asami and Batatyachi Chaal.
A teacher and an editor, Shivaji Sawant is another legendary Marathi author known for his beautiful and poetic sketches of historical characters. His book, Mrityunjay, is loved across the world; the amazing story of Karna gets even better through his words. Other noteworthy books are Yugandhar, Kavadse, and Chhava.
A man of multiple talents, Vijay Tendulkar is widely recognised for his political and social plays. He was an author, worked in the cinema industry, and he was also widely recognised as an excellent social commentator. His most famous work- Ghashiram Kotwal- has been translated into several languages and is recognised as a theatrical masterpiece. Other reputed works include – Silence! The Court Is in Session and The Churning.
Vasant Purushottam Kale, predominantly known as Va Pu Kale, was a Marathi essayist who composed short stories, books and accurate life portrayals. Although an architect by profession, his gift with words gave our country almost sixty amazing books. Most reputed work would be Hi Waat Ekatichi, Partner and Vapuarza.
Vishnu Vaman Shirwadkar, or Kusumagraj, was a famous Marathi author, short story writer, essayist, and an incredible poet. In fact, people widely consider him to be one of the greatest poets in the Marathi Sahitya world. His most recognised works are Natasamrat and Vishakha.
Vishnu Sakharam Khandekar
The first Marathi author to win the prestigious Jnanpith Award for his novel ‘Yayati’. In his earlier life, he was interested in acting.
Later on, he worked as a teacher, and the beautiful irony is that in whatever spare time he got, he wrote his widely recognised work which has gifted Marathi literature with several gems. Make sure you read his Amrutavel and Ashru.
One of the most popular Marathi writers, Vyankatesh Madgulkar was recognised for his compositions about his life in a part of Southern Maharashtra called as Maandesh. He has received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel ‘Sattantar’. Other reputed works are Bangarwadi and Maandeshi Manse.
