Pune has turned into a city of ‘Fitness Fanatics’! And with marathons such as Veterun 2015 approaching soon, why shouldn’t it be? Over the past few months, it has been observed that post-work, and at times, even early morning, people are whisking off to some secret forms of workouts, and are returning feeling much fresher and fitter. What, after all, is the cause of this health conscious behaviour among the citizens?
After poking people at odd hours, catching them mid-workout and pursuing them on weekends, we, at Punekar, unravelled that they were indulging in relatively newer and enjoyable forms of workouts. If you too are bored of your same old gym routine, can’t drag yourself to jogs, and are weary of those inches piling on your waist, read on.
Zumba is a fitness program developed by Colombian dancer, Alberto ‘Beto’ Perez during the 90s. “Sometimes, running the treadmill can be boring. In Zumba, you’re dancing, but also exercising at the same time. It is fun as we move to the beats of different rhythms, namely, Salsa, Hip Hop, Bachata and more”, says Priyanka Kirad, a licensed Zumba instructor who has been conducting classes in the city since over a year. Owing to its increasing popularity, every gym and studio in town has begun offering Zumba classes. Says Suchitra Narkar, a fitness enthusiast and a Punekar, “I’ve been doing Zumba since the past 4 months and it is a real stress-buster. I feel more active all the time.”

Pilates is a physical fitness system that helps to improve the body’s range of motion, flexibility, circulation and postures. “It helps you develop your core muscle strength and compliments other form of exercises”, explains Moushumi Kuvawala, a physiotherapist and certified Pilates instructor in Pune. Developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, a physical culturalist from Germany, this form has picked up in India only in the last decade. “Pilates is a favourite with Bollywood stars, and hence, the city-goers love to follow it too. It is also very vital in my physiotherapy rehabs”, continues Kuvawala. One of the enterpreneurs in the city, Gospi Bharucha, states, “Pilates is religion to me. I’m asthmatic, but since the past three months, my stamina has increased and breathing is more regulated. I haven’t had to use an inhaler since a long time.” Another one, Vikram, says, “My postures of yoga improved due to Pilates. My neck and back pains too are much better now.”
that site Say hello to the ‘Ultimate Dance Workout’!
This one is a creation of a fellow Punekar! Danzo-fit is India’s first dance fitness form which does not rely on the West (aerobics, Zumba, etc.), but rather infuses fitness into desi Bollywood styles. Started in April 2013 by physiotherapist Dr. Nikita Mittal, it has received an overwhelming response from the city. The mantra behind it, she reveals is, “India has such a rich dance and music culture, yet there was no indigenous form of fitness available to explore the possibilities. Here, the best part is that you do not come to know you are exercising. It’s pure fun. However, we incorporate a scientific way to build stamina, shed fat and gain muscle.” Thus, this form of fitness proves to be extremely efficient especially for dance lovers as well as Bollywood lovers. Says Tasneem Hararwala, an IT professional, “I need to enjoy my exercise, or else I won’t do it. Danzo-fit is the only thing I look forward to after a hectic day.”
It sure is great to see the people of Pune becoming so fitness-friendly. Are you one of them? Or do you have a different form of workout that you swear by? Tell us in your comments.
