A walk in the woods
Two diplomats, in the middle of peace talks, take a private walk in the woods to try and achieve a breakthrough in the muddled negotiations between their countries. Will their attempt succeed where official channels have failed? What role do individuals play in the larger game that governments set in motion? What of the longing on both sides of the border to make contact with each other? Lee Blessing’s original play was based on a real-life event, when Paul Nitze of the US and Yuli Kvitsinky of the USSR left their official Geneva sessions to take an unofficial walk in the woods and achieved a breakthrough, which was soon rejected by their governments. The parallels between the original play and the situation in the sub-continent were compelling, and this adaptation is the result of that. The official relations between India and Pakistan continue to swing between hope and despair, while ordinary people in both countries find varied ways to stay in touch.
