In a press conference held in the city, filmmaker Chandrakant Kulkarni credited fellow filmmaker Mahesh Manjrekar to starting this cultural revolution which had everyone from the Marathi industry to come together to support it. “The idea behind MICTA was to give a global platform to Marathi cultural products. In the last ten year of so, the Marathi film industry had undergone change, for good.”
Mahesh Manjrekar added, “Indian films was brought forward by Marathi people. And the subjects they handled back then still cannot be handled by anyone today. The mistake we did was to compete with the Hindi film industry. Right now, we are into making good cinema and this award function will give these films and filmmakers some encouragement.” Manjrekar gave the example of how one win by Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi gave a push to the Iranian film industry. Now, all eyes are set on what next is coming from Iran.
“We want to take these films and plays to smaller towns and places. The escalated prices made us shift to Macau which is also a good destination. When the Rupee stabilizes, we will surely have the function in Switzerland. We had a tough time selecting the 10 films and plays as there were some good ones coming to us,” Manjrekar quoted.
Present at the conference was actor Sachin Khedekar who said that though he had been witness to the changes happening in the industry, he was curious to know why the industry does not have award function abroad like the Hindi film counterparts. “Many would complain to us that they are not able to see certain film or play. With this first stage, they can do that. It is important that this function is more successful.”
