Mother's Day

God could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers.

While the above words may make sense, I personally don’t really vouch for it to be the truth. God is omnipresent, he is everywhere and within everything, so that dispels that first part of the sentence. Secondly, the belief that mother’s can fill the void left by God’s absence is ridiculous, for it is actually the other way round. No one can take the place of a mother. A mother is not just the one who gives birth to a child, she does much more. From harboring the child within her for nine gruesome months, going through the trauma of childbirth just to be able to see the face of her baby to nurturing the child and inculcating good values and habits in him/her, a mother is everything and her job description doesn’t just end here.

Mother’s Day is a day celebrating motherhood and show our affection and love to our mother. Many may resent it and call it a “Foreign Festival or Celebration”, but with India copying the western trend so much, it’s only obvious such ‘days’ would be part of our calendars. We live in a time when people are connected to the world through social media and other communication options, but distanced from their loved ones. Mother’s Day is more of a reminder to us all about our love for our mother, more than just a celebration of motherhood.

Motherhood should be celebrated daily, not just for a day. Being all lovey-dovey about your mom on Mother’s Day is the same as being overtly patriotic on Independence or Republic Day.

So how do we celebrate Mother’s Day? Well, motherhood should be celebrated daily, not just for a day. Being all lovey-dovey about your mom on Mother’s Day is the same as being overtly patriotic on Independence or Republic Day. Just like patriotism or love for the motherland comes for within, so does the love for a mother. So what do we do on May 13th? We pamper our mother’s and tell her how much we love her like most “Mother’s Day” rituals demand? Absolutely. But let’s not stop just there. This year, also make a pledge to give your mother the same happiness throughout the year, and come next year, there won’t be a need for Mother’s Day. While we curse our lives, complain about not getting enough attention and love, belittle ourselves for not achieving our desired goals and think of the world as a living hell, there is a woman who loves us, understands us and stands by us throughout it all, making hell a place better than heaven. Let’s try making her life a little better.

This year, make it a point to make your mother happy and proud and celebrate each day as Mother’s Day! I am one who cannot show affection to the people I love. Nor can I just go and tell someone how important he/she is to me. Thus, I do my part by writing this article and dedicating it to my mother. I hope you find your way to convey your feelings to your mother as well.

Happy Mother’s Day Punekars.
