National Defence Academy (NDA) Team wins the Sabhiki Cup

The National Defence Academy (NDA) Team won the trophy at the Sabhiki Cup Sports Meet held at Air Force Academy (AFA), Hyderabad from 19 – 23 Mar 13. Team NDA defeated team Indian Military Academy (IMA) in a keenly contested match of Hockey by 2-0 to clinch the trophy. The four premier Military training institutions, namely, NDA, IMA, AFA and Indian Naval Academy (INA) participated in this prestigious meet.
This championship had its origin in 1970 and was initiated to promote the spirit of sportsmanship, espirit-de-corps and healthy interaction between IMA, Army Cadet College (ACC) and NDA, hence termed ‘Triangular Meet’.  Subsequently, Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, INA, AFA and INS Shivaji joined the league in 1994, thus making it the ‘Hexagonal Sports Meet’. In 2013, INS Shivaji teamed up with INA, Ezhimala and Hexagonal Sports Meet was re-christened as ‘Sabhiki Cup Championship’.
The trophy called the ‘Sabhiki Cup’ was instituted in honour of Air Marshal DS Sabhiki, AVSM, former Comdt of NDA, who was the main driving force behind this event. The Sabhiki Cup includes games of Hockey, Basketball, Cross Country, Tennis, Squash and Golf.
The NDA team, comprised 49 cadets with Wg Cdr Paul Davis, Physical Training Officer as the Chef de Mission; bagged the honours in Squash and Hockey, and were runner up in basketball and cross country. The presence of Air Marshal Kulwant Singh Gill, AVSM, YSM, VM(G), Commandant NDA at the competition was a great morale booster for the cadets and he received the Sabhiki Cup.
