Pouring rains, steep and rugged off-road trails, and an adrenaline pumping adventure race, spanning 15 hills in the pitch darkness of night. No, this is not a wild card entry into an adrenaline junkie’s dream. This is National Education Foundation’s (NEF) ‘Katraj to Sinhagad Night Adventure Race’! Also known as K2S, this is a one of a kind event in the country, and has become a star attraction for a number of outdoor enthusiasts.
“NEF is a non-profit organisation which has been working in the field of outdoor education for the past 20 years. Since 2002, we have been organising ‘Enduro 3’ in February every year, which is India’s first and only multi-disciplinary adventure race. In 2003, we decided to prelude it with K2S with the hope of inculcating the spirit of responsible adventure racing amongst youngsters. We believe that K2S will prove to be a great opportunity for exploring the outdoors. Last year we had more than 300 teams from across India, and this year we are expecting more participation. We also have a lot exciting prizes to give away!” said Prasad Purandare, trustee of NEF.
K2S was initiated as an exclusive event for collegians, but on popular demand, was opened for all. The race starts at the old Katraj tunnel and ends atop the picturesque Sinhagad fort. Participants have to form a team of three individuals and trek for approximately 16 kms, navigating their way across the moonlit, muddy paths of the breath-taking Sahyadri mountain range.
Since K2S is an adventure race and is held at night, NEF organisers take all the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of participants. There are Experienced and trained Race Marshals throughout the route to guide participants, and medical aid is available at all check points in case of emergencies. Ambulances and doctors are also arranged for as an additional safety measure.
Whether you take this up as a challenge or register for it simply to experience something new, this race is guaranteed to be a lifetime experience for you!
This year the race would be held on 31th-1st July.
