There’s hardly a Punekar who doesn’t know about Fergusson college; FC has become an integral part of our city. Elite and efficient, this college has survived the tides of time and has emerged as one of the most successful colleges in the nation. What makes this college so popular? Why is it so eagerly vouched for? Let’s take a look!
The establishment of Fergusson college was perhaps a subtle taunt to the British. After establishing New English School (1880) and Deccan Education Society (1884), Ferguson College finally took roots in 1892. The college started functioning in 1895 and has been a stalwart education source of the city. The college is named after Scottish-born Sir James Fergusson, who donated Rs 1,200.
Vishnushastri Chiplunkar, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, and Mahadev Ballal Namjoshi were the institution’s main founders. Since its establishment, Fergusson College has been a point of interest for various reputed political leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandi, Swantryaveer Savarkar and Dr. Rajendra Prasad.
Fergusson College has always had a rich and honest culture, with students being rewarded for their individuality. Apart from the excellent quality of education, the college also imparts integrity, hard work and dedication upon its students, so that when they face the world, they can win, and not just sustain.
Standing true with their motto, “Knowledge is Power”, Fergusson College has always inspired innovative thinking. Creativity, analytical and critical thinking, adaptation is all heavily relied upon, making the students well-equipped for facing obstacles.
Fergusson College has also been socially active, their students are well aware of gender studies, equality and ecology, all thanks to their amazing kursi valutor live alma mater.
“When you are a part of this college, you’re a part of something which is larger than you but still fits inside you”
As for the infrastructure, there’s not much which has changed throughout the ages, and that’s my favorite part. The entire campus feels serene and historical, as if I’m stepping into a history book. Some remnants of the pre-independence era are still strongly noticeable, the architecture to be precise.
However, despite the traditional appearance, Fergusson college is equipped with a lot of modern audio and visual facilities. Technological aid is in surplus to this college and the source of charm for this college is highly debated over. Some say it’s the memories, the campus life, while some say it’s the old school charm of the place, which never fades.
A botanical garden, museums for geology, zoology and physics, 13 audio visual halls and one super mega amphitheater; you can probably understand how large the college campus really is and I haven’t even penned down any other facilities.
Overall, Fergusson College has always had a healthy, sportive and somewhat of an enviable atmosphere. As someone aptly said once in their college testimonial, “When you are a part of this college, you’re a part of something which is larger than you but still fits inside you”. Fergusson College has a beautiful soul and it reflects the one which our beautiful city has.
