“A fish, to taste right, must swim three times -in water, in butter, and in wine.”- An Old Polish Proverb.
If Pune were to ask Mumbai the famous dialogue from the movie Deewaar, “Mere paas shaniwar wada hai, missal paav hai, acchi hawa hai, tumhaare paas kya hai?” Mumbai would smartly quip, “Mere paas Maa(saa) hai!”  Well, so what cuz, we have some of the best seafood hotspots in the city! Here’s listing 8 of them… Try not to drool, ok?

1. Maasemaari

A gem in the bonnet of seafood havens in Pune is Maasemari. Situated at two locations, Tilak Road and Shaniwar Peth; the place is owned by the powerhouse of Marathi theatre and film industry, Smt. Lalan Sarang. The place is almost always packed. Must-try dishes here? The Prawns platter, where you are served prawns cooked in a number of finger licking tasty styles, Surmai Goan Curry and Squid Butter Garlic. Their strength is definitely the authentic spice mixes and fresh produce!

2. Mahesh Lunch Home

The place is always bustling with enthusiastic diners gushing about the authentic sea food preparations. Located in Camp, it certainly gets all the spices and recipes right to the ‘T’. The prices however, are not for the faint hearted. Do try the Crab Chilly Fry on the menu!

3. Nisarg

Wine, dine and divine all come together at this beautiful fine dining place near Nal Stop in Erandwane. Albeit a little steeply priced,  you are sure to leave with a feeling that only well-cooked fish can give you. Their best? Certainly the award winning clam chowder! The place spells rich freshness in every morsel. Their Prawn Biryani is delicious as well.

4. Malwan Cha Kalwan

Tucked away unassumingly in the bylanes of Sadashiv Peth is small place called Malwan cha Kalwan. Not exactly for good ambience lovers, this place scores full marks on the taste and authenticity of ‘Laee Bhaari’ Malwani recipes. One small complaint, the portions need to be a little bigger. (Admittedly that might just be the glutton in me talking!)

5. Rahul Restaurant

A hit among food lovers of all areas near and far, Rahul Restaurant, located on Sangvi Kesri Road, Aundh, scores high on its sea food preparations. The place has an old world charm about it, kind of like the places your father would take you to every Sunday evening! Easy on the pocket, the place has plush, comfortable seating. Perfect for an evening out with the family! Must try on the list- the Tawa Crab; whole crab with soft shell fried in dry masala! Deliciousness served up!

6. Fish Land

Bavdhan has surely got a fish food place to boast of now that it has Fish Land, situated just ahead of the petrol pump near Maratha Mandir, the place is relatively new in the recent crop of restaurants on that side of town. It is here that you can enjoy tasty seafood in a great ambience. Do taste the Tandoori Pomfret on your next visit. We personally loved the plump, fresh fish with the spicy and tasty masala. A small grouse though; being relatively new, the place lacks freshness of produce. Let’s hope they work on it!

7. Coconut Grove

Located amidst the hustle and bustle of Camp area, Coconut Grove boasts of serving coastal cusisine from the west coast of India. Consequently, the menu itself is a breath of fresh air! Touted as one of the best seafood places in Pune, the restaurant is must-go for any South-Indian fish food lover.

8. Fish Curry Rice

Ask any true blue fish food fan and they’ll swear by this place. Owned by the legendary producer Suresh Bhat, it initially opened as a small joint at Narayan Peth. The place now has a second branch on Law College road. Their award winning fish thalis are moderately priced and the masala is to die for! Enter their premises and you are greeted by the delectable smell of fish wafting from their open kitchen. Their secret? They bring in fish fresh from the markets of Mumbai. Do try their Green Masala Mutton Kheema as well!
