Finally, Puneites can put their stamp on the literary world, courtesy the Pune International Literary Festival (PILF) which will be held for the first time from September 20-22. It will be in association with MAEER’s MIT Group of Institutions, Pune and will be on the lines of the literary festivals happening in cities like Jaipur, Mumbai and Bangalore. It has been the brainchild of authors Manjiri Prabhu and Sonja Chandrachud. The PILF will have the following people on the advisory board: Padmashri Shashi Deshpande, Shobhaa De and Sidharth M Jain. It will be held at MAEER’s MIT campus in Kothrud.

While talking about the literary festival at a press conference, Chandrachud expressed her happiness at bringing such a festival to a culturally rich city like Pune which has, in the past, also hosted the Marathi Sahitya Sammelan. “Literature is an important part of culture. Apart from putting English literature on the platform here, we are making vernacular literature more mainstream. We need more translations and there is a need for such festivals for emerging writers too. With various workshops, everyone can learn something and take away with them.”

Well-known author and columnist Shobhaa De added, “The star of the festival is going to be the city of Pune. It is one festival whose time has come. With their cultural background, it is a fantastic way to get the Punekar involved. Without the reader, there would be no writer. We have a lot of enthusiasm, energy and passion to make this festival work. We want the city to be on the literary map of the world.”

Manjiri added, “We are trying to remove the line between various literary divides. Literature is a global language, after all.”
Siddharth Jain, who is the CEO-film producer at iRock Films, felt, “Young talent who want to be heard by the people and others can come here. They need a platform and passion to follow their dreams.”

In the three day event, the three streams showcased are English Adult Literature (fiction and non-fiction), English Young Adult Literature and Marathi Literature and Translations one can witness interactive workshops, panel discussions, author discussions and so on. Authors, writers and creative personalities from all media will be seen here. One has to buy passes to attend the events.
